Durian, (Durio zibethinus Murr.) is a popular fruit that commercially planted in Malaysia. The name durian comes from the Malay word ’duri’ (thorn) together with the suffix-an (for building a noun in Malay).

It used to be grown by marcotting, or more commonly, by grafting, including bud, veneer, wedge, whip or U-grafting onto seedlings of randomly selected rootstocks.
With good agriculture practices, the durian tree should start to produce fruits at 5 years of age.

Distribution Of Durian Varieties In Malaysia
Department of Agriculture, Malaysia (DOA) has registered 204 durian varieties since 1934.

There are five varieties of Durian that have been recommended for commercial production

  1. Raja Kunyit/Musang King (D197)
  2. D24 (D24)
  3. Hajjah Hasmah (D168)
  4. Ochee/Black Thorn (D200)
  5. Buluh Bawah/Tekka (D160)

2016 Planted Area = 66,037 Hectares
Production = 302,646 metric tonnes

Musang King D197

Fruit shape is symmetrical and has a light green husk. It has a thick, golden yellow flesh, very smoothwith little or no fibres. Sticky and creamy texture. Sweet and bitter taste.

  • Absence of spine at the styler end
  • Absence of spine around the proximal base
  • Golden yellowish flesh

This variety was registered by DOA in 1993 as Raja Kunyit. It is very interesting to
note that the word “musang” here does not referred to the civet cat but rather to the region “Gua Musang” where this variety was first planted. Musang King is the most popular variety at present.Characteristics of Musang King D197

Durian D24
The shape of D24 is oblate with a light green husk. Its thick flesh has a yellowish, creamy, and dry texture. Durian D24 has a bitter-sweet taste

  • Presence of spines around the proximal base
  • One small spine in between 4 thorns
  • Presence of spines at the styler end
